Map Ban

Map Ban is a feature that lets thousands of players choose the map they’ll play next. It was built from scratch since it wasn’t in the game yet.

The goals

Main goals of the feature

1

Strategy

Players have now the possibility to plan and build better strategies.
2

Drop rate reduced

Reduce the amount of players leaving a match due to a specific map.
3

Data

Gather further data on what players prefer to play.

UX process followed to design the feature

Data

Start from insightful information on behavior of the players leaving matches after some specific maps were selected.

User Journeys

User Journeys came handy to make sure that all our player profile cases and pain points were covered.

Wireframes

I designed and tested different flows/layouts in order to make sure all the voting possibilities were covered.

Prototype

I built different interactive early prototypes ready to be tested by our players.

User Testing

Analyzed results from user tests with real players in a different range of experience.

Iteration

Started to iterate on the prototype based on the user testing feedback and best practices.

Overview

A new feature to build more complex strategies and let the user choose.

The competitive players of Rainbow Six can finally avoid to play maps that they don’t like. Both teams ban at the same time, but the ban of the opponent team is revealed only after the selection ended.

Both teams are banning at the same time.

Simultaneous ban system was a challenge cause players were not used to it.

The vote is simultaneous but the opposite team can’t see it until the timer is over.

The user test results found out that experienced players were expecting the system to behave like Operator Ban, in which the vote is asynchronous. The adding of the text “Both teams are now banning at the same team” helped users to understand it.

The ban selection states

Selected By Player

Needed to be highlighted and had to have a visual hint of “BAN” and not to look like a positive selection.

Selected By Team Mate

The map is selected by someone else in your team. But only the map with more votes will be banned.

Unselected

Nobody voted to ban the map, so this one is not going to be banned from this team.

The map to play is selected among the not banned ones

Once both teams banned and the timer ended, the remaining map is selected or in case the team banned the same map a random roulette will choose the map to play.

This feature is available in the game since
"Y5S3 Operation Shadow Legacy"
